How the Synonyms Feature Works in SEO

The search synonyms feature helps improve the results shown to the customer by linking alternative or incorrect terms to the correct keywords or specific products.

This feature is configured within the menu SEO > Marketing > Search Synonyms.

How it works #

  • Search Term
    • Represents the term the customer typed into the store’s search field.
    • Example: the customer typed “nkie shoes” when searching for a product.



Store View

  • Indicates in which store or country the search was performed.
  • Example: Store Name.

  • Products were returned for the performed search.
    Example: The word “nkie shoes” returned 13 results.

  • Number of Uses
    • How many times was the word searched in the search field.
    • Example: “Nike shoes” was searched 2 times.

Configuration Fields
By clicking on a recorded search query (e.g., “nkie shoes”), you can configure the following fields:

  • Synonym: The term that represents the correct or intended meaning of the searched word.
    Example: If the customer typed “nkie shoes,” we can assume they meant “Nike shoes.”
    In this case, “Nike shoes” should be registered as a synonym for “nkie shoes.”

  • Redirect:
    Allows you to direct the customer to a specific URL.
    This can be a category that includes all “Nike shoes” models or a specific product page.
    Example: Redirect to the “Nike shoes” product category or to the product URL:
    https://mystore.com/nike-shoes

  • Display as Suggested Term:
    Enable this option to show the synonym as a suggestion to the customer.
    Example: “Did you mean: Nike shoes?”

Store Behavior #

  • After saving the synonym and redirect configuration:
  • When the customer types an incorrect or alternative term (e.g., “Nike shoes”) in the store’s search (e.g., Mexican store), they will be automatically redirected to the defined URL.
  • If no redirect is configured, the system will simply display products related to the synonym, if any exist.

Considerations #

  • Even when a search returns no results, it is still possible to see how many times that word was searched.
  • This analysis helps identify popular terms that may need synonyms or redirects.
